Meta, the American super tech giant, is well-known for operating social networking services, virtual reality, and the metaverse. Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and other social software are its products. In recent years, Meta has invested huge amounts of money in AI. Zuckerberg said that it took "hundreds of millions of dollars" of computing resources to train Meta's Llama 3 model alone, and future models will cost more. "This will require billions or even more computing resources in the future," he said. In 2023, Meta tried to cut some future technology and management expenses and cut thousands of jobs as part of what Zuckerberg called the "year of efficiency." But Zuckerberg is still willing to invest in the AI race. It can be said that Zuckerberg is taking a big gamble. Recently, Meta revealed two major achievements to the market:

  • Meta's strongest open source artificial intelligence (AI) model Llama3.1 is about to come out
  • Meta will launch new artificial intelligence glasses at the end of the year

Intraday in the U.S. stock market, Meta's stock price rose nearly 1%. So will Meta stock perform better in the future?

"The industry's top AI model" Llama 3.1 surpasses GPT-4o?

On July 23, the US technology giant Meta released its most powerful open source artificial intelligence (AI) model Llama 3.1. Llama3.1 has three different versions. Zuckerberg called it an "industry's top-level" AI model and said it could compete with similar products from competitors such as OpenAI and Google.

The announcement showed that Llama 3.1 has been significantly updated on the basis of Llama 3. Llama 3.1 is mainly used to drive chatbots, can have conversations in eight languages, write higher-quality computer code, and can solve more complex mathematical problems. Zuckerberg said: "I think the most important product feature of the AI assistant will be its intelligence, and the Llama model we are building is one of the most advanced models in the world."

Meta Llama 3.1-405B surpassed the most advanced closed-source model OpenAI GPT-4o in multiple AI benchmarks such as GSM8K. This means that the open source model has defeated the most advanced closed-source large model for the first time.

Meta is reportedly using the Llama model to power its chatbot Meta AI, which is already running within its apps, including Instagram and WhatsApp, and is also a standalone web product. Zuckerberg said Meta's chatbot has hundreds of millions of users and expects it to be the most widely used chatbot in the world by the end of the year. He also expects other companies outside Meta to use Llama to train their own AI models.

New AR glasses look like ordinary glasses?

A netizen posted on the Threads platform, posting a photo shared by Mark Zuckerberg earlier this year, zooming in to show two pairs of glasses. Zuckerberg then replied to the netizen that we will share more information later this year. This is likely to be the look of the new generation of artificial intelligence glasses we are about to see (although the picture is blurry), but this post has aroused a lot of people's expectations.

Subsequently, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg confirmed in an interview with YouTuber Kallaway that Meta is developing new smart glasses. Zuckerberg further added that the new smart glasses may debut later this year. However, it was not until today that we saw more information about the new Meta smart glasses.

Meta recently announced that it has officially brought the Meta AI artificial intelligence assistant to the Quest3 headset. Among them, the relevant update will be available to users in the United States and Canada later this summer. Meta is bringing the artificial intelligence of Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses to Quest 3, thereby enabling the so-called "Meta AI with Vision" feature. At that time, the AI will be able to "see" the content in the user's real field of view through the headset, and answer and analyze the questions raised by the user accordingly.
